| Predators Holdings LLC announced today that the group’s purchase of the Nashville Predators and Powers Management (the company that operates the Sommet Center) for $193 million from Craig Leipold has completed, and the local ownership group will immediately take over the day-to-day operation of the National Hockey League team and the Sommet Center. “On behalf of the ownership group, we are thrilled to complete the sale,” said David Freeman, chairman of Predators Holdings LLC. “We look forward to contributing to the Predators’ success on and off the ice and solidifying the franchise’s future in Nashville.” The sale was approved by the NHL’s Board of Governors last Thursday. Freeman will serve the group as chairman and governor, while William “Boots” Del Biaggio and Herb Fritch serve as an alternate governor. Predators Holdings LLC includes local executives in finance, health care and private business. Members include: Freeman, Del Biaggio, Fritch, Christopher Cigarran, Thomas Cigarran, Joel and Holly Dobberpuhl, DeWitt Thompson V, John Thompson and Warren Woo. “Our immediate next steps will be to provide necessary direction to the team’s staff while assessing opportunities to grow the Predators’ fan base and development,” added Freeman. | |

- Below, an amazing document of communion between hockey fans and players. It was recorded last Friday night in Martin, Slovakia, when perennial minnows MHC Martin beat HC Kosice in the Slovakian Extraliga and reached second place at the start of the two-week December break. After the game highlights, watch the unbelievable send-off the 4,000 fans at the Martin Winter Stadium give their players, and how much fun the players have giving back the love. It may be seven of the most amazing minutes of hockey footage you’ve ever seen.

- Roberto Luongo rarely has a bad game, and his consistently high level of play has earned him the title of 2007 goalie of the year from Goalies' World magazine.
The Vancouver Canucks star edged Henrik Lundqvist of the New York Rangers. The two other finalists were Sean-Sebastien Giguere of the Anaheim Ducks and Martin Brodeur of the New Jersey Devils.
Performances from Jan. 1 through Dec. 3 were weighed by the magazine's staff.
"Roberto Luongo has been the most consistent goalie throughout the calendar year," states the magazine. To win the award, a goalie has to excel in all three segments of 2007: the second part of the 2006-2007 regular season, the 2007 playoffs and the first part of the 2007-2008 season.
"During that stretch, Luongo played 75 games and maintained a .930 save percentage and 2.07 GAA. He had 57 hot games, 13 average and five bad ones. He also stole nine wins," the magazine said.
Only three other goals played more than 70 games in 2007. Brodeur and Lundqvist were in 76 each and Buffalo's Ryan Miller played 72. The only goalies besides Luongo with more than 40 hot games were Miller with 44 and Evgeni Nabokov of the San Jose Sharks with 43.
Dwayne Roloson of the Edmonton Oilers was the 2006 goalie of the year as determined by the publication.

- On November 8th, 2007, former Flyer Eric Lindros officially announced his retirement from the National Hockey League, ending a career that never lived up to expectations. Lindros never quite reached superstar status thanks to many injury plagued seasons, during which he suffered multiple concussions.
Lindros Retirement Party Photo A concussed Eric Lindros at his Retirement Party with Chloe Sevigny
On Saturday night, Lindros' friends and family threw an extravagant Retirement Party for him in New York City. Lindros was given a special jersey early on in the night, which he wore for the remainder of the party. The jersey was embroidered with the word "RETIRED" spelled down the front and contained the colors of the four teams for which Lindros played, i.e the Flyers, the Rangers, the Maple Leafs and the Stars.
Ironcially, Lindros suffered what was later revealed to be a mild concussion when he lowered his head to blow out the candles on his "Happy Retirement" cake and was inadvertently elbowed by his 86-year-old grandmother, who was preparing to cut the cake.
Lindros immediately dropped to the floor and was curled up in the fetal position, in a scene eerily reminiscent of the devastating hit delivered by Scott Stevens of the New Jersey Devils in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals in 2000, which also led to Lindros curling up in the fetal position on the ice. That night, the First Union Center was completely silent as trainers attended to Lindros. But on this night, there was a roar of laughter from his friends and family who thought Eric was joking around.
"I lost it when Eric dropped like a sack of potatoes. I thought he was making fun of himself for being kind of a pansy during his playing career," said Lindros' brother, Brett. "But after about two minutes of cracking up, someone told me he wasn't kidding and that he was actually hurt."
After about 10 minutes during which Lindros' father administered smelling salts to his son, Eric felt good enough to stand up and continue the party, but was reportedly woozy for the rest of the night. "He was stumbling around with a goofy smile on his face and mumbling to himself," said former Flyer teammate, John LeClair, who was in attendance at the party. "Most people assumed he was drunk, but Eric didn't touch a drink all night."
Another former Flyer teammate in attendance was Rod Brind'Amour who said, "I was worried about Eric after his Grandma knocked him out because he didn't seem right the rest of the night. Then when I saw him trying to leave with that actress Chloe Sevigny, I knew something was wrong. She's a nice girl and all, but I think she might be uglier than me, and that's saying something."

- The scary arterial skate cut suffered by Florida's Richard Zednik flashed back on Martin Brodeur Martin Brodeur to his youth, when a fellow player died when another "stepped on his jugular. There was no one [medical] there. I talk to my kids' coaches a lot because of that experience. It's a contact sport with a weapon on your feet. It's surprising it doesn't happen more," Brodeur said.
Coach Brent Sutter noted that several younger leagues require protective neckwear, and that Tommy Albelin spoke of a teammate dying on the bench in Sweden because of a similar cut.
